Play DVDs on Your XP Computer
Installed a new DVD player but can't play DVD movies? That's because Windows XP doesn't come with built-in DVD decoder software. Only some OEMs install this software on the machines they sell. Here's how you can tell whether your copy of XP has DVD decoder software installed:
Click Start | Run and type cmd in the Run box to bring up a command window.
At the command prompt, type dvdupgrd /detect. Press Enter.
Wait until a dialog box appears, either telling you that no decoders are found, or telling you what DVD decoder was detected.
If you need a DVD decoder, you can buy a third-party product. The Microsoft Web site lists decoders that are compatible with Windows XP at: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/windowsxp/buypacks.aspx
