Play DVDs on Your XP Computer
Installed a new DVD player but can't play DVD movies? That's
because Windows XP doesn't come with built-in DVD decoder
software. Only some OEMs install this software on the machines
they sell. Here's how you can tell whether your copy of XP has
DVD decoder software installed:
Click Start | Run and type cmd in the Run box to bring up a
command window.
At the command prompt, type dvdupgrd /detect. Press Enter.
Wait until a dialog box appears, either telling you that no
decoders are found, or telling you what DVD decoder was
detected.
If you need a DVD decoder, you can buy a third-party product.
