How to Disable Auto Search for Network Printers and Folders
Windows XP has a feature that checks for shared resources on the network, such as printers or folders. If you don't want XP to search for new shared resources by scanning the network periodically, you can disable this feature as follows:
Click Start | Control Panel | Appearances and Themes | Folder Options
Click the View tab.
Under Advanced Settings, click the checkbox that says Automatically Search for Network Folders and Printers to uncheck it.
Click OK.
Note that the feature is already disabled if your computer belongs to a domain, or if there are more than 32 computers on your network with shared resources.
